What is your career background?
After completing a BA (hons) in English, I enrolled in a Post Graduate Degree in Publishing. This covered every aspect of the business, however, it was the editorial element of the course that I particularly enjoyed; so when the role of Sub Editor at Prima was advertised in The Guardian, I immediately applied. I felt very privileged to start my magazine career at such a prestigious company. From Prima, I took a promotion to Senior Sub Editor at House Beautiful, then returned to Prima as Deputy Chief Sub Editor and, shortly afterwards, was promoted to Chief Sub Editor.
What attracted you to NatMag?
Having always had a passion for magazines, I was immensely impressed with NatMag's portfolio of titles, many of which had been permanent fixtures in my home while I was growing up, bought by myself or by family members. It was quality products such as those produced by NatMag that prompted my love of glossy magazines and inspired my enthusiasm for the industry.
What does you role involve?
As Chief Sub Editor, it is my responsibility to guarantee the accuracy of the magazine and readability of the content, ensuring it is in line with the house style and meets the readers' expectations. My daily responsibilities include distributing copy to the Sub Editors to prepare for design, then allocating completed layouts to edit in preparation for print. I then pass each page to the senior editorial team and take in amends, before sending to print in time to meet the press deadline. In addition, I compile the magazine flatplan and liaise with Advertising to accommodate their selling needs.
What is the best thing about working for NatMag?
My career at NatMag has afforded me many opportunities, and it is this that I consider to be one of the biggest benefits of working for the company. The scope for internal promotion has meant that I have quickly been able to progress up the career ladder, while being made to feel like a valued employee. I have been lucky enough to work with some fantastic teams of people, in an environment where enthusiasm and enjoyment is actively encouraged. All this in addition to vibrant offices in a superb location, in the heart of the city!
